What to Wear Wednesday | Londonderry NH Photographer

You've made the inquiry.

You've booked the date.

You've sent in your deposit.

Now what the heck are you going to wear?!?

I think that deciding what to wear for a photo session is the most daunting task for a mom. Which colors will be best? Coordinating, but not matching? Will the kids actually WEAR the clothes?! But don't fret. Here are some tips and ideas about what to wear for your upcoming session.

Colors:
I suggest that you pick a color scheme. And then stick to it! Use a palette of a couple different colors to give you some variety in your choices. If you have a patterned piece (such as a boy's plaid shirt or a girl's dress), be sure to use those colors as the rest of your palette. This will give your outfits a cohesive look, without looking too busy.

Coordinate & Layer:
Once you have your colors picked out, find pieces that will coordinate, but not match. Long gone are the days of the jeans and white shirts for everyone. So choose outfits that compliment each other, but are not the exact same. For any season, but especially spring and fall pictures, you want to be sure to layer. This adds dimension and interest to your outfits without detracting from your beautiful faces. Don't be afraid to put a coordinating sweater and belt over your dress. Adding a cardigan or sweater vest to your son's outfit. An accent headband and a pair of bangles to your daughter's ensemble.

Comfort:
Let's talk about mom, first. Since you are most likely the one to be pulling all of these together, you might leave yourself for last. But don't! Find an amazing dress or outfit that you feel like a million bucks in. I promise you, this will make all the difference for your shoot. Think about what your comfort level would be in all sorts of poses. For instance, don't pick a dress that you would only want photographed from the waist up. We want you to look and feel good all over.

For the kids, be sure to pick items that are comfy. For instance, if you know that your son won't wear a bow tie, don't force it. It's not worth the red eyes, tears and pouts in all of your pictures. Let your child pick out a special piece to wear for the shoot. I let my daughter pick out a necklace to wear for our family photos and she was so excited to get dressed. It changed the whole dynamic of the shoot, since she was involved.

Just as you want your kids to be comfortable and happy in their outfit choices, we want the guys to be as well. Be sure to pick items that they would wear on a regular basis and would feel relaxed in.

Putting it all together:
I have used Polyvore (see below) to put together concept boards before family photos. It is easy to grab items from different websites and put them all together to get an idea of what it will look like. And a major plus - you can just go back and order the clothes online - saves you a shopping trip!

Once the clothes have arrived, I like to lay them all out and be sure the colors match my expectation and what I was looking for. Then, I have any questionable pieces tried on for fit. Then, into the closet they go - all on hangers - put together completely so there is no last minute running around.

Family Session Concept Board: The great thing about this board is that it can all be found in the same store! So if you are on a time crunch, you can be in and out quickly without having to travel to lots of different places.

Back-to-School Concept Board: These are great for back to school and pulled together from a couple different stores. Can't you see your little one with a composition notebook and some nerd glasses with these outfits?

I may contact you to make sure you are all set with your outfit choices and see if you need any assistance. I may also ask you to send me a picture so that I can be sure to bring props - such as blankets, chairs and stools - that will coordinate nicely with what you have chosen. Don't be afraid to ask questions and have some fun!
